Why I Love Cruising (And Why It Can Be a Great Way to Travel)

Cruising is one of those travel experiences I keep coming back to. I’ve been on quite a few cruises over the years, and every time I step onboard, I’m reminded why this style of travel continues to be one of my favorites.

A cruise vacation offers a unique mix of ease, variety, relaxation, and adventure — all wrapped into one experience. Whether you’re new to cruising or have sailed before, there’s something special about unpacking once, waking up in a new place, and letting the journey unfold.

Here are a few of the reasons I love cruising — and why it can be such a great way to travel.

Cruising Can Be a Great Value

One of the biggest benefits of cruising is the overall value. Your cruise fare typically includes:

  • Your accommodations

  • All main dining meals

  • Entertainment and shows

  • Activities throughout the ship

  • Coffee, tea, and basic beverages

When you consider how much is bundled into one price, cruising can be a very cost-effective way to travel — especially compared to booking hotels, transportation, meals, and entertainment separately on land.

A quick note: While many things are included, there are some additional costs to be aware of. Most cruise lines charge a daily gratuity. Drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic), specialty dining, spa services, and excursions are usually extra. The good news is that these costs are optional, which makes it easier to keep your overall budget under control.

Visit Multiple Destinations Without Repacking

This is one of my favorite parts of cruising.

You can visit several destinations in one trip — and your hotel and luggage come with you. There’s no need to book multiple hotels, arrange transportation between cities, or repack every few days.

Yes, port days can sometimes feel short, and there are moments when you wish you had more time. But I’ve found that cruising gives you a taste of a destination. Sometimes that’s all you need — and other times, it helps you decide where you want to return for a longer, land-based trip.

And let’s be honest… there are also ports where a day is more than enough, and you’re simply grateful you had the chance to experience them.

The Service Is Truly Top-Notch

Cruise ship service consistently impresses me.

From the dining staff to the cabin stewards to the entertainment teams, the crew works incredibly hard to make your experience special. There’s something comforting about being taken care of — knowing your room will be refreshed, your meals will be ready, and help is always nearby if you need it.

It adds to the feeling that you can truly relax and be present.

There’s Something for Everyone

Cruises are wonderful for multigenerational travel — and even for groups with different interests.

On most ships, you’ll find:

  • Kids’ and teen clubs

  • Fitness centers and classes

  • Pools and quiet adults-only areas

  • Daily activities and enrichment programs

  • Live entertainment and shows every night

You can be as busy or as relaxed as you want. That flexibility is one of the reasons cruising works so well for families, couples, friends, and even solo travelers.

Relaxation, Adventure, and Unforgettable Views

Cruising offers a beautiful balance.

One day you might be exploring a new destination or heading out on an excursion. The next day, you’re sipping coffee on your balcony, watching the ocean roll by.

There’s incredible food, new places to see, fascinating people to meet, and moments that feel unhurried — something we don’t always get in everyday life. And those ocean views? They never get old.

A cruise vacation has a way of helping you disconnect — in the best possible way. Less rushing. Fewer decisions. More time to simply enjoy where you are.

Easy Planning and Predictable Costs

Another reason I love cruising is how straightforward the planning can be.

You unpack once. You know where you’re sleeping every night. Meals and entertainment are already taken care of. And because so much is included upfront, it’s easier to keep your travel costs under control.

For travelers who feel overwhelmed by planning every detail, cruising can be an excellent option.

A Few Things to Consider If It’s Your First Cruise

If you’ve never cruised before, here are a few things worth keeping in mind:

  • Not everything is included, so review what’s covered in your fare

  • Port days can be shorter than land-based travel

  • Ships vary greatly — choosing the right cruise line and itinerary matters

  • You can spend very little onboard… or quite a bit, depending on your choices

Doing a little research — or working with someone who knows cruising well — can make all the difference in finding the cruise that fits your travel style.

Final Thoughts

Cruising isn’t for everyone — but for many travelers, it’s an incredible way to explore the world with ease, comfort, and variety.

For me, cruising offers the perfect mix of discovery and downtime. It creates space for connection, reflection, and unforgettable memories — and that’s what travel is really about.
